Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA)
Issue Date: 17-Dec-2007
Abstract: Conversations between an artist and a conservator can help to ensure that the artist's moral rights are upheld and that his/her intent is maintained throughout a conservation treatment. The overall attitude of the artist with regards to the artwork is crucial and can inform conservation practice, even when certain technical details may have been forgotten. The documentation of artist interviews can help to better inform future conservators and custodians of the artist's attitude toward the work and its preservation.
Description: Information about the Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA 1990) and the AIC code of ethics and guidelines for practice is included in this paper. A documented interview with Siri Berg (a mixed-media artist living in New York City) illustrates the merits of artist interviews. Conversations with Berg culminated in a conservation treatment deemed successful by the artist and conservation standards.
