Abstract: Gas liquid partition chromatography has been used to identify and examine the distribution of methoxyl groups in partially methylated cellulose. The method has been successful in identifying the tri- and di-O-methyl isomers of methyl glucosides. More work will be required to extend the technique to the mono methyl derivatives and to unsubstituted glucose. The results of this technique on methylcellulose ranging in degree of substitution from 0.28 to 3.0 are given.
