Abstract: Librarians and other information specialists view the library instruction of college and university students as essential. In the geosciences such instruction deals with a great variety of formats, subjects, and sources of information, including an increasing number of machine-readable bibliographic and numeric data bases. Geology librarians have developed a wide range of programs to meet the needs of both undergraduate and graduate students. Frequently, however, these programs have not attained the acceptance and cooperation of geology faculty, thus decreasing their chances for success. Improved communication between geology faculty and librarians should help solve the problems of library instruction.
