Introduction

More and more, people are interested in limiting access to either their entire web space or certain portions of it. For instance, some sites wish to allow access only to a certain set of network addresses. Usually, however, people are interested in requiring a user / password pair that they can give to people to limit access. The good news is that it can be done. The bad news is that the process is somewhat complicated.

NOTE: While the instructions described in this tutorial are fairly general and may work on a wide variety of platforms, differences in specific site management could prevent normal users from successfully setting up a password protection scheme. I can only guarantee that the process will work on the School of Information cluster.
